Okay, if life is a journey, and at this point in my life, I believe it is… then relationships are the people we meet along the road. Some walk beside us for years. Some stay for only a season. A few arrive like detours we never asked for and somehow become the route that changes everything.
Every relationship leaves something behind. They make us and, sometimes, break us. They bring truth, joy, comfort, and the startling realization that we have needs we never knew how to name. They can also scar us, make us sad, and make us wonder about life itself, usually at two in the morning, when perspective has apparently gone to bed without us.
Relationships are tricky that way. Not every person we love is meant to travel with us to the end. Some are companions; some are teachers; some are lessons wearing very convincing disguises. Through them, we discover our strengths and weaknesses, our limits and longings, what we can offer, and what we can no longer accept.
I was fortunate to have the parents and grandparents I did. Those relationships formed my earliest understanding of love, family, steadiness, and belonging. My husbands, all of them, taught me something, too. They showed me my limits in some ways and, in others, revealed who I really was. My last husband taught me what I was worthy of and that life could be what I wanted it to be. That is no small lesson.
My children taught me to love more deeply. They made me want to be better and do better… not in the vague, inspirational-quote kind of way, but in the daily, demanding, beautiful way that asks more of the heart. My grandchildren have taught me to laugh at this age, to slow down, and to see again the miracle of life, love, and ordinary joy.
But the relationship that carries me every day… the one that grounds me and reminds me who I truly am and always have been… is my relationship with God. It is the steady thread running through every other bond, every ending, every beginning, and every version of me I have met along the way.
So, which relationship taught me the most about me? That is the tricky part. The honest answer is not one relationship, but the culmination of all of them. Each added a stitch to the fabric of my life. Some were soft, some strong, some pulled loose, and some had to be mended, but together they helped shape the person I am becoming.
And I am still becoming. At this stage of life, you might think I would have myself completely figured out, neatly labeled and filed away. Apparently, life did not receive that memo. A new relationship appears, or an old one takes an unexpected turn, and suddenly I learn something new about myself.
Today, I begin a new adventure with some trepidation alongside someone I have known all her life. I do not know exactly what we will discover about each other, or how I will handle what lies ahead. But I know this… the experience will teach me more about me. Of that, I am sure.
That is the way of life. We journey on, meeting people and building relationships that change, deepen, surprise us, and sometimes end. Yet none of them is wasted. They all become part of the story, part of the fabric, part of the sacred and unfinished work of becoming. And if I have learned anything about myself, it is this… I am still learning, and that may be the most honest kind of wisdom there is.
