A little hindsight, a little humor, and a handful of truths worth carrying…

If I could sit across from someone young and just starting out in life, I would not pretend to have all the answers. First of all, no one believes that person anyway. Second, life has a way of humbling even the most confident among us, usually right after we say something bold like, “I’ve got this.”

The truth is, the choices are many. When you are young, every road seems to come with a sign pointing somewhere important, and half the signs look like they were painted by someone who was guessing. As you grow older, you collect advice the way pockets collect lint. Some of it useful, some of it mysterious, and some of it only discovered long after you needed it. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but it is not much help when you are standing in the middle of a decision with no idea what to do next.

Still, there are some lessons that are worth saying out loud, even if they sound simple. Maybe especially then. The first is this… you cannot borrow yourself out of debt. Money has a way of making promises it cannot keep. A loan may solve things for a moment, but it does not always solve a pattern. Learn to live with what you have, make a plan for what you owe, and do not let temporary relief become a permanent chain.

Pay attention to the world around you. Not everyone has your best interest at heart, and that is not said to make you suspicious of everyone. It is said so you will learn discernment. Kindness is beautiful, but so is wisdom. Trust people, yes, but pay attention to what they do more than what they say. Life will introduce you to helpers, teachers, takers, talkers, and people who can smile while holding a shovel near the hole they expect you to fall into.

Build a foundation that will hold you up, because life gets heavy at times. That foundation may include faith, family, friends, habits, education, work ethic, savings, boundaries, or simply the quiet ability to get back up one more time than you fall down. Whatever it is, do not wait until the storm comes to decide where you are going to stand.

And please hear this clearly… self-care is not a luxury. It is not selfish. It is not something you earn only after everyone else has taken what they need from you. Rest. Breathe. Make room for joy. Learn when to say no without writing a five-page apology. You are not a machine, and even machines need maintenance.

Most of all, live in a way that you can live with. Times will change. Priorities will shift. What once felt urgent may become background noise, and what you once overlooked may become the very thing that matters most. But if you can look at your choices and know you acted with integrity, courage, compassion, and a little common sense, you will have something solid to stand on.

So what advice would I give someone younger? I would tell them this… choose carefully, love wisely, spend thoughtfully, listen closely, rest when you need to, and build a life sturdy enough to carry both your dreams and your hard days. And when you stumble, because you will, do not mistake the stumble for the end of the road. Sometimes it is simply life’s ungraceful way of teaching you where to place your feet, or to help you change your course… as I like to say.. A God Thing…
