Handling Uncertainty Without Letting It Handle You…

We like to believe we can control life. Every little detail. Every outcome. Every twist in the road. Cute thought, right?

That may be our first mistake. Uncertainty is a shadow in life that is always there…

Life does not always unfold according to our carefully color-coded plans. Sometimes it takes a sharp left, loses signal, and refuses to ask for directions. Uncertainty shows up whether we invite it or not, and if we are not careful, it can bring anxiety, sadness, overthinking, and a full committee meeting of second-guesses.

I know that place. I have been there, and chances are, I will probably visit again. But I am learning that uncertainty does not have to be the boss of me. When life feels shaky, I try to shift my focus back to what I can control… my response, my attitude, my next step, my willingness to keep going.

I cannot fix the future. I cannot muscle life into behaving. But I can live in the present, choose my path with care, breathe through the unknown, and remember that flexibility is not weakness. Sometimes the strongest thing we can do is duck, weave, adjust, and evolve.

The things that do not go as planned still build us. They teach us balance, patience, and grit. The things that do go as planned give us a foundation. Both matter. Both shape the journey.

One of my blessings is the ability to evolve… to find a new way to do, to be, and to move forward. Worry may be a real buzzkill, but it does not get the final word. Not when there is another lane to change into, another mindset to try on, another way around what is ahead.

Uncertainty is part of life, but surrendering to defeat does not have to be. As for me, I am striving to take the journey one day at a time, with a little focus, a little faith, and just enough humor to remind myself that even when I do not know what is next, I am still capable of becoming who I need to be, to do what must be done.

  1. This really resonated with me, especially the part about uncertainty not having to run the show. I’ve noticed the same thing: the moments that felt most out of control ended up teaching me the most about what I can actually manage — my reaction and my next move. The “duck, weave, adjust, evolve” line is definitely going into my notes. Thanks for putting this so clearly, Joni.
