They say adulthood begins at eighteen, as if the universe hands you a cake, a voter registration card, and a complimentary stack of bills. Some people feel grown at sixteen. Some are still waiting at forty-two. For me, adulthood had been lurking in the background long before eighteen, pacing quietly through the shadows of my high school days.
But at eighteen, it finally stopped lurking and knocked loudly…
My defining moment did not arrive with fireworks, a dramatic soundtrack, or a wise old mentor pointing toward my destiny. It came as an ultimatum. I decided I could no longer live under the rules, control, and constant tug-of-war that made home feel smaller than my dreams. So, I left for college, and just like that, one decision shoved me into adulthood. I chose the University of Life over college and began living.
Was I ready? Probably not. Was it a mistake? I do not think so. Do I regret it? No. I may have a few wishes, a handful of what-ifs, and an occasional conversation with my younger self that starts with, “Girl, you really thought you had this figured out?” But regrets? No.
That moment was the beginning of my learning journey. Adulthood, I discovered, is not one grand doorway you walk through. It is a hallway full of responsibility, decisions, bills, lessons, surprises, hard choices, and the occasional need to sit a while, cry, and then pick myself up and start moving again…
People say adulting sucks, and sometimes it does. But looking back from this later season of life, I can see that the road I chose carried me through more than I ever imagined. I became an adult at eighteen, in one moment, one decision… I am still wandering, still learning, and still traveling that same road… Don’t tell anyone, but there are some days I would give anything to be that kid who needs to be home by dark, pulling my wagon full of treasures from the day spent in the woods and at the creek. Yes, would be nice to have more days off in adulthood.
