Rambling on about personal responsibility, imperfection, boundaries and accepting evolution and change…
There is a certain freedom in admitting that life is not perfect. Not in a gloomy, “everything is terrible, pass the stale crackers” kind of way, but in a deeply human, shoulders-dropping, exhale-finally kind of way. Life is messy. People are complicated. Plans change. The Wi-Fi goes out exactly when you need it. And, perhaps most inconveniently, you are also not perfect. A revelation for so many of us!
Honestly, that last part is where most of the growth lives. We spend a lot of energy trying to make life behave, as if the universe is an unruly toddler who simply needs a firmer schedule. But life does what life does. The more useful question is not, “How do I make everything go my way?” It is, “How do I show up when it doesn’t?”
Persona responsibility, it is not a fancy punishment. Personal responsibility gets a bad reputation because people often confuse it with blaming yourself for everything. That is not responsibility. Responsibility is simply the courage to look at your part honestly. What did you choose? What did you avoid? What did you allow? What needs to change now?
You cannot control every plot twist, but you can control whether you keep handing the pen to people who have already written you into scenes you hate. Owning your life does not mean you caused every storm. It means you stop pretending you have no umbrella, no shoes, and no right to walk in another direction. You have free will, you have to learn evolve through what comes.
Evolution is not a betrayal of who you are, it makes you who you are and helps you to ‘become”. Change is not a failure of identity. It is evidence that you are alive and paying attention. You are allowed to outgrow habits, relationships, goals, and versions of yourself that once made perfect sense. The shoes fit until they didn’t. That does not make the old shoes evil; it just means your feet kept going.
Sometimes growth feels graceful, like a sunrise or as exciting as a fresh journal to fill. Other times it feels like being shoved through a revolving door while blindfolded. Either way, evolution asks for honesty. What is no longer working? What keeps costing you peace? What are you pretending not to know because knowing would require action?
While evolving and accepting the changes that life brings, boundaries are needed but often thought as mean or selfish. Protecting your boundaries is one of the kindest things you can do for yourself and, oddly enough, for other people too. Clear boundaries prevent resentment from moving in, unpacking its little suitcase, and sleeping on your couch indefinitely. They tell the truth before bitterness has to scream it.
A boundary can sound like, “I cannot take that on right now.” It can look like leaving the room before the conversation turns into a demolition derby. It can be as simple as not answering a message at midnight just because your phone lit up like a needy lighthouse. Boundaries do not require a press conference. They require consistency.
The advice or tip I keep coming back to is this… If I could tape one life-changing reminder to the inside of every overthinking brain, including my own, it would be this… stop waiting to become perfect before you participate in your own life. Take responsibility without turning it into self-attack. Protect your boundaries without apologizing for needing oxygen. Let yourself change without writing an obituary for every old version of you.
Life will keep being imperfect. You will keep being beautifully and inconveniently unfinished. That is not the problem. The problem is believing you have to be flawless before you are worthy of peace, growth, love, or even just a really good Tuesday. You do not. My life-changing tip… Start where you are. Clean up what is yours. Guard what matters. Change when it is time. And for heaven’s sake, give yourself a little grace and mercy… God does.
