Childhood Camping… From Backyard Tents to Motorhome Adventures…

A nostalgic reflection on the journey from blanket forts to lifelong outdoor appreciation

Some of my fondest childhood memories are wrapped up in sleeping bags and woven through the canvas of backyard tents. Camping was more than just a summer pastime, it was a doorway to adventure, discovery, and family connection. Looking back, those early experiences laid the groundwork for a lifelong love of the outdoors.

It all started with makeshift tents draped across lawn chairs and old blankets, creating a magical world just steps from our back door. My friends and sisters and I would gather flashlights, snacks, and stories, turning ordinary evenings into extraordinary adventures. The crackle of laughter under a starlit sky and the gentle hum of crickets made the backyard feel like the wildest frontier. We spent so many nights sharing ghost stories, turning simple nights into cherished adventures.

As we grew older, our camping experience evolved. The arrival of a motor home meant new comforts and expanded horizons. Suddenly, we could chase the sunrise across state lines, stopping wherever curiosity led us. The motorhome brought a sense of home to the open road, with cozy beds and stocked kitchens, but it never diminished the thrill of exploring new places. Every trip was a new chapter, whether parked in our motorhome in a parking lot in New Orleans or deep in the woods beside a river nestled among towering trees. We camped, we experienced, and we enjoyed the sights and the sounds of life across the country.

Camping trips became our passport to nature’s wonders. We wandered through state and national parks, hiked trails lined with wildflowers, and marveled at roadside attractions we’d only seen on postcards. Each moment in the wilderness, whether climbing rocks or spotting deer at dawn, deepened my appreciation for the world outside. Nature felt both immense and welcoming, offering endless opportunities for exploration and awe.

Those childhood camping experiences instilled in me a deep, unwavering love for the outdoors. Camping taught me to appreciate the simple beauty of nature, to seek adventure, and to value time spent with the people I care about. It inspired a curiosity that continues to guide me, encouraging me to explore and respect the world around me.

Today, camping remains a cornerstone of my life—whether I’m hiking local trails, planning road trips, booking a few nights in a state park cabin (too old to pitch the tent anymore), or simply gazing at the stars from my backyard. The lessons learned and the joy discovered during those early camping adventures shaped my connection to nature and continue to influence how I live.
