Fuel, Not Filler… What Healthy Eating Means to Me

“We are what we eat” sounds like the sort of phrase off a commercial… it may seem simple, sensible, and mildly judgmental when you are holding a doughnut. But the older I get, the more truth I find in it. Food does more than fill a plate. It can comfort us, weigh us down, lift us up, and, when we choose it with care, fuel the lives we actually want to live.

My road toward healthier eating became serious about eight years ago. My habits had left me overweight and feeling bad, yet food was also my comfort. It was my crutch when life turned chaotic, the thing I reached for when everything else felt heavy. The trouble was that my comfort was adding more weight, both literally and figuratively.

So I made choices, and then I made different choices the next day. I changed, and I am still changing. “Healthy” is not a finish line I crossed eight years ago but rather it is something I keep defining as my body, my tastes, and my life evolve. For me, healthy eating means choosing foods that do not merely feed me but fuel me.

And yes, it is hard. Food is everywhere, and convenience has a very persuasive marketing department. Microwave meals, frozen dinners, ready-made everything… and God help us, the dessert aisle, glowing like a sugary runway. Restaurants serve portions large enough to apply for their own ZIP codes, and still we eat, because it is there and because it is easy.

Protein is the foundation of my day, whether it comes in a shake, a bar, or the food on my plate. It helps fuel me, but it cannot do the job alone. Fiber, greens, fruit, and what my mom used to call “roughage” deserve room too. They are the practical, unglamorous essentials that keep the engine running smoothly.

Chicken and fish are my mainstays. Salads, broccoli, beans, and fruit fill in the gaps and add the things my body needs. I do not believe any one food is automatically bad when enjoyed in moderation. I simply try to remember that the body is an engine, and it needs the right fuel to work well and keep running. Eating healthy, for me, is about fueling my body, not just filling it.

As I get older, the challenge grows a little harder. Not because I am less willing to make the effort, but because tastes change, routines shift, and life keeps rewriting the menu. I do not require as much food as I once did, so I try to enjoy what I eat more. I take it as a challenge to find foods that meet my protein goals and still bring real pleasure.

I am still learning, still choosing, and still evolving. Some days are easier than others, but perfection is not the point. The point is to listen to my body, honor how far I have come, and choose, with equal parts wisdom and grace, he fuel that helps me keep going…
