Brunch at Brennan’s… Rain, Mimosas, and a Flaming Finale…

Some meals blur into the hum of travel. Others arrive with a silver spoon, a rainstorm, and a dessert that literally catches fire.

I still remember my first brunch at Brennan’s in New Orleans as if the courtyard were framed in glass just for us. We were on vacation in our motorhome, headed toward Mexico, and had stopped in New Orleans for the night. By morning—or, let’s be honest, close to noon—the rain was threatening to roll in, our sightseeing in the French Quarter had slowed down, and Brennan’s suddenly sounded less like a restaurant and more like destiny.

Brunch at Brennan’s is not your normal casual affair. It sweeps in with a Cajun-Louisiana accent, seats you by the courtyard garden, and lets the rain do the decorating, and the sound of good music fills your ears and makes your feet tap.

There we sat, drinking in the color and culture of New Orleans while Mom and Dad sipped mimosas and I met what may still be the richest, most perfectly seasoned Eggs Benedict I have ever tasted. The perfect bite, as some now promise, is possible. As if the rich, perfectly cooked star of the show was not enough, then came the finale… Bananas Foster, made tableside in a chafing dish, served warm over ice cream, and dramatic enough to deserve its own curtain call. Brennan’s is known for inventing Bananas Foster in 1951, and once you see that buttery, cinnamon-rum sauce flare to life, you understand why this dessert became legend.

It was not my last time at Brennan’s, but it was the meal that stayed with me. A memory of a  rainy-day New Orleans outside, white-tablecloth magic inside, and a plate that turned brunch into a story. If you find yourself in the French Quarter, go. Order the eggs. Save room for the bananas. You won’t regret a single decadent bite.
