When I was young, learning was simply what we did. We went to school. We went to Sunday school. We learned lessons from our parents, our grandparents, our neighbors, and—whether we were ready for it or not—society itself. Back then, learning came with sharpened pencils, church shoes, spelling tests, Bible verses, dinner-table manners, and the occasional look from Mama that taught a lesson faster than any textbook ever could.
But somewhere along the way, I discovered something about myself… I did not just tolerate learning. I loved it. I still do. I have always had a curious mind. The kind that wants to know how things work, why people do what they do, where a road leads, what a word means, and whether there is a better way to make or do things, and there usually is.
My Daddy once told me,”You are never too old to learn something new.” I suppose I took that to heart. Or maybe he planted it there years before, and it just kept growing. Either way, those words have followed me through life like a good walking stick… steady, useful, and always there when the road gets uneven.
I am grateful for every bit of education I have been blessed to enjoy. Formal learning has opened doors for me, stretched my thinking, and given me tools I did not even know I needed until life handed me a project with no instructions and said, “Figure this out, sweetheart.”
Still, I have learned that life’s daily lessons are just as important as the ones we receive in classrooms. Sometimes they are gentle. Sometimes they arrive wearing steel-toed boots. Life teaches us through joy, disappointment, change, loss, love, mistakes, second chances, and those moments when we realize we should have read the directions before assembling the bookshelf.
We are meant to learn as we go. We grow, we adjust, we level up, and little by little we understand more. Life is not a straight hallway with neat signs pointing us to the next lesson. It is more like a winding road with detours, potholes, surprise scenic overlooks, and the occasional chicken crossing for reasons no one can explain.
Change is built into every aspect of life. Families change. Work changes. Technology changes faster than most of us can update our passwords. Our bodies change, our opinions change, our priorities change, and sometimes our patience changes depending on how long the customer service hold music has been playing.
The choice, then, is not whether life will change. It will. The real choice is whether we will keep learning how to handle it, move through it, and master what we can so we are not left standing still while the world keeps spinning. Learning helps us adapt. It keeps our minds sharp. It gives us confidence, resilience, and the ability to recognize new opportunities when they tap us on the shoulder.
Being a lifetime learner does not mean having all the answers. Thank goodness, because some days I am still looking for my glasses while wearing them. It means staying open. It means being willing to ask questions, admit what we do not know, try again, laugh at ourselves, and keep moving forward with a little wisdom and a lot of grace.
I am proud to say I have an open mind when it comes to change, life, and this big, complicated world we are all trying to understand. I believe learning keeps us young in the places age cannot touch. It keeps wonder alive. It reminds us that growth is not reserved for children, students, or people starting over. Growth belongs to all of us.
So here I am, still learning as I go, still growing as I make my way through life, still discovering that every season has something to teach. And if my Daddy was right, and I believe he was, we are never too old to learn something new… I am off in a bit to my new job, to learn and grow a bit more. Never too old !!!
