My First Computer… A Journey into the Digital World

Rambling on about the impact of the gift of technology…..

My first computer was an unexpected gift from my sister and brother-in-law. At the time, he was the “tech guy” in the family, always up to date with the latest gadgets and innovations. When they brought me the computer, my initial reaction was anything but excitement… I honestly thought it was a bit crazy. Back in the 1990s, computers seemed clunky and complicated, and the internet, with its dial-up connection and unmistakable screeching sounds, felt more like a novelty than a necessity.

The internet experience was nothing like what it is today. I remember the process of connecting: hearing the dial-up tones, waiting patiently for the webpage to load, and the thrill when I finally made it online. At first, I thought the internet was just a passing fad, something that wouldn’t be useful to me in the long run—boy, was I wrong!

One of the earliest discoveries that changed my perspective was Yahoo Groups. I stumbled upon communities of people who shared my love for poetry and creative writing. It was a revelation to find a place where I could write, share, and store my work electronically. No longer did I have to worry about lost pages or misplaced notebooks, my computer became a reliable archive for creativity.

Even though that first computer was bulky compared to the sleek laptop I use now, it was a portal to a world I had never imagined. It opened doors to endless possibilities: I traveled around the globe from my desk, read stories and poetry from distant lands, and made friends across the country from the comfort of my home. That device became much more than I ever expected.

Today, I sometimes miss the original online platforms I once frequented, but my computer remains my main line to the world. Upon reflection, receiving that first computer was the best gift I ever got, a gift that continues to enrich my life in ways I could never have predicted. It taught me to embrace change, connect with others, and express myself in new and meaningful ways. For that, I am eternally grateful.
