Rambling on about Hobbies and Finding Joy in Simplicity

Embracing Nature and Creativity in a Clutter-Free Life…

Throughout my life, I have been driven by a multitude of creative passions—crafting, painting, redoing furniture, decorating, baking, cooking, and gardening. Each endeavor brought its own unique joy and satisfaction. Over the years, I accumulated a considerable collection of supplies: baskets brimming with fabric, drawers overflowing with paints and brushes, and shelves lined with jars and tools for every project I could imagine. My creative journey was abundant, but it also led me to a place of overwhelming clutter.

Recently, I made the difficult yet liberating decision to purge the excessive supplies my passions had led me to collect. Parting with these things was both hard and sobering. I realized that the accumulation of materials was actually holding me back. The sheer volume of “stuff” made it harder to start anything creative, rather than inspiring me to create. It was a revelation—sometimes, less truly is more.

Now, I find my greatest joy in simpler, more natural pursuits. My porch, yard, and houseplants have become my sanctuary. Living in the Southeast Coastal area, I find peace and beauty in planting flowers that return each spring. Caladium bulbs, which burst with color in May and thrive until the late-arriving cold, bring vibrant life to my beds. Coleus, in a palette of colors, finds its own way around my yard, spread by wind, birds, or perhaps just a touch of divine intervention. Wild green elephant ears, originally planted by my grandchildren, are a constant and sturdy presence, returning year after year regardless of the challenges.

There are spider plants, Autumn ferns, Kimberly Queen ferns, and Asparagus ferns, all thriving and multiplying with each season. These plants, passed from hand to hand and pot to pot, tell stories of growth, resilience, and renewal. Tending to my garden and enjoying the beauty of nature has become my true “Zen” at this stage of life.

Writing has also become a cherished outlet. My laptop is a constant companion, allowing me to write from the porch surrounded by the sights and sounds of my garden, or even from my bed when inspiration strikes late at night. There is true freedom in being able to capture thoughts and stories wherever and whenever I wish.

I still keep a few art supplies—some paints, sketch pads, and felting materials—just in case the mood to create in those ways returns. But the burden of hoarding creative supplies is gone. I am no longer weighed down by the need to always be making something; instead, I am free to enjoy the creative moments that naturally arise, whether they involve my flowers, my writing, or simply basking in the beauty of nature around me.

In embracing simplicity and letting go of excess, I have rediscovered the pure joy of creativity and nature. My life feels lighter, more intentional, and deeply fulfilling. This is what I yearn to do and what I truly enjoy the most.
