Cumberland Island… Barrier Island off coast of South Georgia

Name an attraction or town close to home that you still haven’t got around to visiting.

One place I’ve longed to go but never gotten too…yet…  Cumberland Island. It is the largest barrier Island off the coast of St. Mary’s GA. Just about 45 minutes from me. It is a National Park protected seashore of 17 miles. It’s uninhabited by man, wild horses, beaches, and historic ruins grace the Island. It is accessible by ferry only, its a great day trip. There are no services there, no grand hotels, or strip malls… you can primitive camp there with a pasd. I just want to walk the trails, see the wildlife, explore the ruins of the old Carnegie-built Dungeness mansion, the Plum Orchard Mansion, and the First African Baptist Church in the 19th-century Settlement. Maybe this spring, it really is crazy how we live close to places others travel to see and never venture there…
