The Dark Void of Holding on….

Rambling on about Navigating the endless abyss of waiting on the tech support industry and the experience of being on hold…

Hold on please… What is a good callback number if we lose connection… Let me see what I can do and find out for you… HOLD PLEASE… We have all heard it before if we do any kind of techno stuff. Your internet, your phone, your computer, anything that you need to ask questions about. IN a world where the younger generation feels life is supposed to instant, nothing but a click or tap away, we are now in an era of mindlessly long hold. Even my generation, The Boomers of the world are beginning to lose patience with this… I mean I have only so much time left to live, I have been on hold for what seems like an eternity in order to leave a message, get a simple answer, or even when I receive a callback from services requested. Why call me back if you are going to put me on hold AGAIN….

As I am writing this I have been on hold with AT&T for a scheduling appointment for what seems like 20 minutes now, they called me back. Really, no one has this kind of time, the music is driving me crazy too. Already been on with the AT&T company this morning answered all the questions, requested new service for the house and during that time was put on hold, cut off and called back once and all was arranged, or so we thought. The dreaded push buttons, be told things, get to the right extension and then.. HOLD PLEASE. Our caller volume is higher than normal at this time, please HOLD. SERIOUSLLY???

At this time, I have now probably retained this musical tract from AT&T for the rest of my life, at some point in time, I will hear this tune playing in my mind and wonder what the words are, there are none. But it will haunt me at some point, I am sure. Yes 45 minutes on hold, I am letting it go… yes, the old hangup, call me back again if you ever figure it out. You would think… I know this day and time considering something is common sense, makes sense or is just “right” is now an outdated concept. With all the online remote jobs I see advertised for call centers, tech help and the likes that this process would now be short, succinct, and to the point in order for us to just get on with life. BUT NO… Well, I suppose we can hope, but I figure as the quality of things seems to be fading we are setting ourselves up to fall deeper into the darkness of the abyss of bad customer service. Anyway, I have things to do and no time for floating in a dark abyss…
May the Force Be with You, And Your Hold Time Be Short…
