Family Thanksgiving Traditions…

Do you or your family make any special dishes for the holidays?

Thanksgiving as long as I can remember,  and I’m old…. has and was always filled with the dishes I now have passed on to my kids and grandkids. While many are the same, some over B the years have morphed into better versions of themselves.

As a child, I can remember a table set with China, crystal, and silverware, and the kids table the same. A buffet set before us filled with Turkey, dressing, goblet gravy, sweet potato casserole,  English pea casserole,  greenbean casserole, with pistachio salad, deviled eggs, mashed potatoes, and back then, the obglitory jello ring.. a mythical concoction made by my Aunt Jean who could not cook anything else.

The turkey, the dressing, the sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, and deviled eggs still are on our family menu. The pistachio salad often makes the cut as well. Over the years we have tweaked and added other things… broccoli and cheese, macaroni and cheese, and even replaced the sweet potatos with butternut squash… but the bird, the dressing it is the staple of our tradition.

As for the sweets… pecan pie, pumpkin pie, sweet potato pie, chocolate pie my Mama made with mile high meringue… caramel cake, pound cake, and apple pie were favorite fare… even frozen fruit salad. We have added different sweets and no one can make moms chocolate pie as well as she could… now, our usual are pumpkin pie, pecan pie, and key lime pie.

This Thanksgiving I am spending it away from kids and grandkids, with my sister… today we are cooking a turkey but its not our main fare, instead steak and crab legs will be, she lives on the coast in Florida… its just us two and that is our favorite dinner. I hope you all fill your plate with memories and that you find time to reflect on “Thankfuls” …

Happy Thanksgiving to you today….
