Comfort food, feeding our body and soul…

What’s your go-to comfort food?

Comfort food, a universal thing…  We all have an affinity for the delicacies that relate to our heritage as well as what our family favors. When restaurants offer up ” comfort food” specials, they usually include regional dishes that Mama cooked. In the same respect, our go-to personal comfort foods evoke in us a sense of security, happiness, and memories that warm not only our stomach but our heart as well.

Food, an ingredient to life, is necessary for survival and the health of our bodies. It’s ironic it also feeds our memories and emotions as well. I have foods that feed and evoke the varied emotions of my life… when I’m sick or rundown from life’s weight and worries, hot biscuits, with butter and honey, a scrambled egg like Mama made. It hits. When I am anxious or sad, chocolate or sweets,  bribe my emotions to rise and move past the feelings. When I am missing my mom and dad, my grandparents I cook. I cook the dishes that make me feel comforted. Cube steak and gravy, green beans, potato salad, meat pie, pancakes and bacon, pound cake, butterbeans, and cornbread. All of these are foods that comfort me and make my soul happy. A lot of these dishes are also ones my kids and grandkids ask me for… I suppose our family traditions are carrying on.

We are handing down our comfort food generation to generation… the dishes of our growing up,  of our family and friends blending and evoking and satiating a hunger in our bodies and souls…
