Which activities make you lose track of time?

Time, Benjamin Franklin said, is the stuff life is made out of… While that is a fact, I must say the squandering of it is something we all do from time to time. This quote was written on a sign at Twelve Oaks Plantation in Gone With The Wind… it spoke of the lifestyle of the southern life in the movie and is one of a few quotes from the movie I retained.  I catch myself lost in time often in the morning, this quote comes to mind and the spell I’m in breaks and I get busy, well most days. Another quote, “Tomorrow is another day…” at times overrides the need to get up and be productive.

I’m engaging in one of those activities right now that makes me zone out and retreat into my mind, and feed my soul… I’m staring out the window watching the slight breeze through the oak trees, the moss moving like tattered clothes on a line, watching the redbirds come and go from a feeder placed strategically outside on the corner post of my porch. Watching the world outside my window wake up… lizards sunning on the rail, tiny frogs perched on the back of the chair outside, a cloud of gnats swarming in the sunlight as it breaks through the trees. Anyone watching would say, “Are you okay, Where is your mind? ” My answer… I’m just daydreaming among the trees… the activity that I squander the most time at is this… thinking at times about what’s ahead, what’s past, what I want, what I need, and others, just nothing, watching, taking in what is happening around me.

Oh, I can lose track doing other things such as cleaning out things, reading, planning a new project, searching for things I can’t seem to find, and even just walking about my acres tending to things. But daydreaming and as I say, finding my zen… these top the list.

I believe we all should lose track of time, we need time to breathe, for our minds to be still. It is the stuff that feeds our soul. As my Mama told me, the older you get the faster time goes by, so, I’m gonna get back to finding my zen…
